Case Practice | Application of Relay Protection Automatic Test Platform in Large-scale Power Plants

The correct operation of protection devices is directly related to the safe operation of power plant systems. Periodic inspection of protection devices is a key means to verify the logical performance of protection devices and ensure their correct operation. Restricted by the insufficient coverage of test cases, the dependence of test result judgment on work experience, and the long test cycle, the traditional manual verification method is difficult to meet the safety protection needs of high-density units and intelligent equipment in modern power plants.

The Power Plant Relay Protection Automatic Test Platform establishes a standardized test procedure library, is equipped with high-precision power amplifier output and aviation plug interfaces, and can realize one-click closed-loop testing of protection devices. The test process requires no rewiring and unmanned operation, and automatically generates customized template reports. The test time is shortened from about one week to 8 hours, the test case coverage rate is increased to more than 98%, and the closed-loop test technology is used to achieve millisecond-level operation characteristic verification. The comprehensive application of this innovative mode has realized the transformation of periodic inspection of protection devices from experience-driven to data-driven, and the test efficiency has been improved by 5–8 times compared with the traditional method.
 

 

△ Automatic Test System

1. Platform Overview

The relay protection automatic test platform simulates the power system to generate variable AC voltage, current signals and switching signals, and simulates generators to generate variable AC voltage and current signals, so as to test the steady-state and dynamic performance of relay protection equipment and PMU equipment.

Working Principle: The platform software controls the tester to output test signals online, simulates the WAMS master station to communicate with the device under test to obtain real-time measurement data. The test software calculates the measurement error according to the measured data and theoretical data, and judges whether the test items meet the requirements.

  1. Meet the latest test specifications, cover a full range of test items, and support all protection tests.
  2. Realize automatic testing without manual intervention; communicate with protection devices to collect data and form a closed loop.
  3. Realize automatic verification of setting values and hard press plates.
  4. The software automatically generates test reports, making the test results more objective and accurate.
  5. Equipped with multiple output channels, it can test multiple lines simultaneously with high test efficiency.

2. Test Method

Test Site: A certain power plant

Protection Devices: PCS-985GW 500kV Generator Protection, PCS-985TW 500kV Transformer Protection, CSD-300T 500kV Generator Protection, CSD-300GW 500kV Transformer Protection

Test Process:

  1. Connect the current/voltage test lines and the input/output aviation plug lines to the generator-transformer unit protection and the relay protection tester for applying quantities to the protection device. Use network cables and switches to connect to the online port of the tester for collecting action feedback, telemetry information, calling protection setting values, etc.
  2. Open the scheme configuration program, select the corresponding 500kV generator set protection test template, and modify it appropriately according to the operation instruction requirements of the station.

  1. Open the automatic test program, call the device setting values, click the scheme matching button to instantiate the test scheme.

  1. Click the automatic test button to start synchronous automatic testing.
  2. After the test is completed, check the test results and generate a customized template report. All logical verifications of the generator protection have passed.
